History Of Metropolis
In 1989 Dream Theater broke ground on their new epic Metropolis Part 1: the Miracle and the Sleeper. But it wasn't released until 1992 on Images and Words. It was about two twins who were confined to the same mind. And how there were three things that are eternal- love, deceit, death. Finally after 7 years DT released Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory. This new concept album/rock opera made some of the quickest sales on the internet. Catapoling Metropolis Part 2 to the top of sales. On top of this DT started a web board completely for the new cd. This sequel goes back and forth between 1928 and the present. Its about the two twins fighting over Victoria and the Sleeper die, but the story carries on into the present with a ever controversial ending.
All of the opinions on this page are opinions, you may write me if you have an opinion, but if you believe you have a fact don't bother.
Right now there is only so much of the story. DT has played the entire SFAM on tour which has given a lot of clues. A lot of this info is taken off the Metropolis Board on Dream Theater's site.
Before 1928-both the Miracle(Senator Edward Baynes) and the Sleeper(Julian Baynes) were born. They were "confined to the same mind". The Miracle was a well liked and a hard working kid while the Sleeper was completely opposite. He was a lazy worker.
In 1928- The Sleeper was a drug dealer and a gambler at the time he met Victoria. After a few dates the Sleeper and Victoria hit it off. But later he would realize that Victoria "is not the one the Sleeper thought he new". Victoria met the newly elected Senator- the Miracle and fell in love with him.. Victoria went back and forth to the Miracle and the Sleeper making them more and more jealous. The Sleeper was having a hard time "living this charade". and decides to go back to his "Home". The Miracle decides that he'll "make her my wife". but then he realizes it's either deceiving his own blood or leaving Victoria. On a "Friday Afternoon" Victoria "Breaks Free of the Miracle". The Miracle-heart broken decides to kill the two. So he plants a note in his pocket saying:
"This feeling inside me
Finally found my love, I've finally broke free
No longer torn in two
I take my own live before losing you."
Victoria went to Echo's Hill Ln. to tell "Jullian(the Sleeper) that they'd get to together soon" and that she broke it off with the Miracle. Victoria and the Sleeper would "rendezvous in a pathway out of view". Then the Miracle caught them.
*****Now There are many different tragedies that can be accurate*****
1)The Miracle shot Victoria twice and then she screams. Then the Sleeper pulled out his switch blade and struggled with the Miracle for a second but the Miracle out muscled him. The Miracle said "Open Your Eyes Victoria" and shot the Sleeper twice. The Sleeper fell "on top of that girl". Then a witness hears the screams, "sees the switchblade on the ground" and asks if he can help the Miracle. Then the Miracle realizes "he must act fast to cover up" and then he "turns the gun on himself" . In all there were 4 shots and all three spirits were "exchanged for a new."
2)The Miracle shot Nicholas twice and Victoria screams. The Miracle says "Open Your Eyes Victoria". And he shoots her twice. He goes home and later he realizes he must "act fast to cover-up" and "turns the gun on himself".
In all there are 4 shots and the 3 spirits are "exchanged for a new".
In the Current- Nicholas begins to get dreams about a Victoria. He goes to a hypnotherapist to get some help. During his trace he begins to feel like "Strange Deja Vu". After he wakes up he goes out to find out what really happened in 1928. He finds a old man(who is the reincarnation of the Sleeper) who tells nick about a "Fatal Tragedy". Nicholas goes to research some old news papers and found a paper that was released the day after. It talks about the switchblade, the suicide note, the witness, and the gun. Nick then realizes he is the reincarnation of Victoria and how he looks through her eyes.
After reviewing what happened in 1928, Nick feels there is "something still missing". He goes to the Miracle's old house(now abandoned) to find a more clues. He goes in to the house and has another flashback. The flashback Nick sees is a "woman screaming and a man who pleads forgiveness". Nick goes back to the hypnoitherapist to get more info.
(Now There Are Many Endings. Everytime that a new one is thought up I will release it A.S.A.P.)
1) The hypnotist begins to feel the story is very familar and realizes that he is the Miracle reincarnated. He leaves the house while Nicholas is still in trance. Later he comes back in his car. He drives up to the house with a very familar tunes on the radio(you know who it is). Then he walks up the stairs then goes into the house. He listens to the tv (or radio?) for a while then turns it off. He gets a drink and turns on the record player. He walks in to the room where Nick is sleeping. The door make a squeal and the hypnotist says: "open your eyes Nicholas". From behind the door Nicholas appears and kills the hypnotist, the hypno scream and falls back and knocks the record players arm to the outer edge of the player.

This is a very complicated story. If anyone want to give me a piece of their mind feel free to contact me. By the way I will update every time a new thought is created.
Points To Ponder
1)In Part 1 it says: "Metropolis watches and thoughtfully smiles she's taken you to your home"
Then in Part 2 during HOME it says:
"Victoria watches and thoughtfully smiles she's taking me to my home."
What does this mean. I think this is a major clue to what really happened.
2)Part 1 says:
"It can only take place when to struggle between our children has ended."
Has the twins' destiny already been written?
3)Doesn't the entire story remind you of JFK. Think about it.
The Miracle is the Senator-JFK was the President.
Victoria is Maryilin Monroe
Nicholas is JFK Jr.
The t.v. clip that you hear at the end of Finally Free is the same clip that was broadcasted when JFK Jr. died.
I don't know how to fit the Sleeper into this. I don't know much about JFK, I haven't learned about it much school yet.
4) This was written on the Metropolis Web Board on 12/17/99, by someone else.
Victoria is Nicholas reincarnated.
Jullian is the Sleeper, Edward is the Miracle (the names refer to their success in their life.)
Jullian and Edward are confined to one mind(as described in Metropolis Part 1: the Miracle and the Sleeper.
(then they write the same scenario which is described in the 2nd Tragedy)
They then believe that Nicholas is the one who walks into the house and finds there is a record player going. Then the Hypnotist walks out from the door and kills Nicholas.
5) This was also written on the Metropolis Web Board.
"I would like to share a link between "Metropolis Prt 1 and Prt 2". Victoria really isn't mentioned in prt 1, but her presence is in the songs images. In prt 1 the Miracle and the Sleeper are trying to build the biggest city in the world. It seems that the twins are building the city in her images.
1)"Metropolis watched and thoughtfully smiles, She's taken you to your home" -From Metropolis part 1
2)"Victoria watches and thoughtfully smiles, She's taken me to my home" -From Metropolis part 2
6) The Old Man
The Old Man mentioned in Fatal Tragedy I believe is the largest clue of them all. He can be anyone. The Sleeper reincarnated, the Miracle at an old age, the witness? But what I think is that in Metropolis Part 1 the lyrics sound like they are in a first person point of view. But it doesn't say who is the one talking. So it is my belief that the old man is Metropolis, or the one who watches over the twins.
7) New Info!
On the Official Website they released the lyrics. It has the last two lines as well. It says the Hypnotist says, "Open Your Eyes Nicholas". And Nicholas screams. This must mean that the hypnotist killed Nicholas.
I think that in part 1 when it says "City's cold blood teaches us to survive"
In part 2 it says "the cities cold blood calls me Home"
I believe that the "city" is being referred to as New York. It seems that the twins must have been abandoned of some sort, and that have to survive in the city. Then in part 2 they both say in the song "Home", "....taken me back to my Home". In some way besides being a against each other for the love of Victoria. We all know that the Miracle is Senator Edward (which you can find in the liner notes in SFAM). And now I believe that Sleeper is either the leader of a mob. In the instrumental part of Home, you hear dice rolling, and Victoria is having sex with one of the twins. I believe that she's having sex with the Sleeper. So my point is that the Sleeper is trying to take control of New York, and so is the Miracle.
Here are some comments that James LaBrie said during an interview a month before SFAM was released.
"It's lyrically about regression and a past life. It's a cool story based around a man finding out, by being regressed by psycho therapy, he learned he lived a previously life and in it he was a girl. And this girl was living a life somewhat deceitful and exciting, and the two men she was having a relationship with were brothers."
These are just a few questions that I've been asking my self. So now I'm asking you please help me!
"I don't want to give it all away but, your dealing with this person who today, this present day, is going to a therapist. And when going through his regression, he learns he was a woman, and did have a relationship with two people, brothers, and ends up investigating his own self due to a tragic happening. Once the album been released, I can go through the whole story. The character's name is Victoria Julian. I don't want to too much, but I will say that we're ecstatic about the whole thing, can't wait. There's going to be a new resurgence. Already, I can't ask for more. I'm having a great time right now. It's a positive time and we're all getting along exceptionally."
