BAF Tour Reviews and Pictures
November 16th - Hamburg, Germany
"I was at the TA Hamburg show on Friday. It was a great show, needless to say, but the funniest moment was during Suite Charlotte Pike (or was it Stranger in your soul?) when Neal Morse took over the drumkit. MP, with nothing else to do, decided to dive off the stage into the audience. Extremely funny. The rest of the band looked on aghast!
I'm still laughing, not quite what you expect from a mature and serious prog band "
"Mike fell just on me, and my glasses were broken after that !!
[IF] you want to have probably the best music time of your life, just go to a transatlantic show ... daniel sings like an angel, roine is "mr roine stolt", pete, heh, he's just amazing, mike is "mike portnoy"... anything more to say? ... and neal morse is ... neal morse is ... i don't have any words to describe him on stage ... you just have to see him ..."
November 13th - Cologne, Germany
"Wow, thats all I can say about the Transatlantic-gig Ive been to yesterday ... A marvellous show of about 2 hrs. of pure music !!!
Heres the facts, for those of you who go to one of the other European shows (and for those who unfortunately cant):
As I said, the music took at least 2 hrs of time, plus announcements and jokes in between.
The band did not start on time: Doors 7 p.m. Show 8.15 (or so)p.m.
Everyone was in good shape (even Neals voice), and especially the interaction of MP and NM was worth watching.
The playing was tight and the addition of Daniel (I dont know the spelling of his last name, but hes from (Pain of salvation!) made TA sound more "complete" compared to the TA live-CD ...The hall was very crowded, I cant really guess how many people there were ... maybe 800, 1000 (???)
And here is the setlist of TA in Cologne (NM: I guess I know this sound ... it sounds like Germany !):
1. Duel with the devil
(with some jamming in some parts)
2. My new world
3. Suite Charlotte Pike
(with injected Beatles-songs after each of the songs parts ... Kill me, but I dont know exactly what songs there were ... someone said that it was a Medley of all the songs on "Abbey road" ... I only recognized "She came in through the bathroom window" and "Carry that weight", guess I have to update on Beatles ... this big medley also featured a solo-spot of PT and a very small solo spot of MP ... everyone incl. Daniel got to sing some lead vocals ... sad enough that NMs guitar-amp sucked and he wasnt amplified through the PA system ... he took it with a laugh and more acting ...)
4. We all need some light
(NM dedicated this one to George ?, the bass-player who helped SB out on the last European tour and who died earlier this year, very emotional ... the was a lot of atmopheric jamming in this version ... especially by Roine ... Now, I dont know the word in English for this thin candlestick that sprinkles and frizzles when you light it ... but there were some in the first row of the audience ... MP saw that and requested one for himself while playing ... coooool)
5. Stranger in your soul
("The epic to end all epics", NM ... Once again great tight playing ... another solo-spot for Pete and one for Neal ... Neal did some extremely cool classical piano-stuff until he jump to real black blues ... as NM wants the band to jam on what came to his mind, Pete went over to NM to ask for the right chords ... imagine, PT asking ... hihi ... great sight ! There was also some guitar duelling between NM, RS and Daniel ... Roine did a lot of spontaneous playing in the whole show ...)
And as an encore (NM: "Its all about epics tonite ... everything is epic ... If you came to hear short songs, youre in the wrong place")
6. All of the above
(I havent seen a band before that has a 31-minute-hit that everyone can sing along ... actually the audience did a lot of singing on this one ...)
Unfortunately this show will not be a live-album because of the technical problems w/ NMs guitar and Daniel who broke a string and played the whole of Charlotte on 5 strings, but I bet they recorded it ...
So, I think this is a very complete review ...
Im impressed of how much fun those guys spread on stage ...
and once again ... WOW !
P.S.: Photography was allowed (w/ small cameras ...)
P.P.S.: They played a tape at the end of the concert of which I would guess, no, bet that the drummer was MP ... I dont know, but maybe we caught a first glimpse on the new DT ... but Im not sure ... it sounded a lot like Tool ... intense, calm with a, leading monotoneous but not boring bass-line ... some acoustic guitar, sound-effects by a keyboard ... but the singer actually did not exactly sound like JLB ... but ther were a lot of effects on the voice so ... It wasnt what youd expect from DT but introductional and outro-music always has a meaning on any concert that involves MP ... I know that ... but, I guess Ill have to wait until Jan, 22nd ..."

"Well I've just got home from the show and it was superb. I managed to obtain the set list that the fella from PoS had and I'll scan that in sometime. Got a good few pictures of the band in general and a load of Portnoy. Some jammy lad in front of me managed to get a Drum Stick to add to 'the other one he already had when he met DT in NY'. Anyways the set list was as follows:
Duel with the Devil
My New World
We All need some light
Charlotte/Abbey (very big beatles medley)
Stranger in Your Soul
Encore: All of the Above.
The only worrying thing at the show was the fact the MP seemed to look worryingly like the DJ Roger Sanchez (the beret and glasses did it really), and WTF was Roine wearing. There was also a good bit (which I have two pictures of) when Neal Morse ran across the stage grabbed a couple of drumsticks and joined in with Mikes Drum Solo. All in all a superb evening. "
